Gift Idea: Willow Tree Figurines
One of the questions we often get from adoptive parents is on the appropriateness of gifts for their child's birth mom. Because of laws governing legal expenses and gifts, we always recommend checking with your lawyer first. But in general, a gift for your child's birth mom is never a bad thing, as long as it's obvious that it's not intended to be some sort of illegal compensation for placing her child with you. (That would be buying a baby, and that is both wrong and illegal.) Of course, gifts are dependent on personality, and some may not like the idea of getting a gift for placing a baby for adoption, or as a reminder of the anniversary of an adoption. Usually though, something small to show her that you are thinking of her and appreciate her is a great idea.

One of the gifts that both birth parents and adoptive parents have mentioned to me as a great symbol of their feelings for their birth mom are Willow Tree figurines. These small but powerful little figurines send a message that she is loved and that you appreciate that she has gone through great difficulty. They are also generally inexpensive and won't send any red flags of inappropriate or illegal expenses being given, if the occasion is at placement.

Another idea from one of our AGOHA adoptive parents was to give both birth mom and child the same gift, such as a stuffed animal, and when you send pictures to the birth family have the milestone pictures taken with the same stuffed animal, so that the child's growth is recorded using something that the birth family can hold. I thought that was a great idea, and so thoughtful for that mom to try to keep her child's birth parents connected with her even from a distance.
