For both an expectant mother or birth mother and potential adoptive parents, the adoption agency you choose can make or break the adoption experience. The process is filled with challenges for everyone involved, and you need to know the agency you choose has your back.
Ideally, you should work with a local agency that will meet with you face-to-face. You need personal attention when making such an important decision.
When you initially contact an agency, you should never feel pressured to make a commitment. Choosing adoption takes time. Let the team at A Gift of Hope Adoptions answer your questions. Fill out our confidential contact form or give us a call.
Questions an Expectant Mother May Want to Ask
Expectant parents considering adoption should be the priority for any reputable adoption agency. You need to be heard and respected.
Your first connection can be as detailed as you like, but it should be more about your story than anything else. The agency representative may ask about how far along you are in your pregnancy or if you understand the adoption process, but the main point of the discussion is to learn about you.
As you move forward with the process, you’ll have more specific questions. According to the National Council for Adoption, these are a few questions you may want to ask:
- How does the agency help expectant parents determine if adoption is the right choice?
- Does the agency only offer help for adoption, or do they make referrals for parenting?
- What type of post-placement counseling or support do they provide?
- How much input can expectant parents have in the choice of the adoptive parents or the type of adoption plan?
- Will the agency facilitate a meeting between us and the potential adoptive couple?
- How is the agency licensed?
- Will you explain my rights as an expectant parent?
You may also ask if there are other birth mothers that you can speak with who’ve placed a child with the agency. Learning about their experience will help you get a better idea of what to expect.
Questions Potential Adoptive Parents May Want to Ask
The goal of every reputable adoption agency should be to find a loving family for a child, not a child for a family. The greatest benefit an agency can provide adoptive parents is to ensure that the expectant mother receives complete and open counseling.
When a birth mother understands her rights, receives counseling, and has looked at all of her options, you have less opportunity for a failed adoption. You want a completely ethical process.
Here are a few questions the National Council for Adoption suggests you ask and others you may want to consider:
- What are the agency’s requirements for prospective adoptive parents?
- How long has the agency existed, and how are they licensed?
- How many waiting families do they currently have?
- How much communication should we expect from the agency throughout the process?
- Is the agency full-service, or will we need to acquire outside services?
- Can the agency provide references of other families who have previously adopted through them?
- What are the fees, and when will we be expected to pay each one?
- Will you facilitate our meeting with an expectant mother once we’re matched?
