If you’re facing an unexpected pregnancy, you have a big decision before you. You’re not sure you can parent this child, but can you place them for adoption? Deciding what’s best for you and your baby takes a lot of thought.
Your first meeting at A Gift of Hope Adoptions will be relaxed, without pressure, and completely confidential. We won’t judge your situation or expect you to commit to adoption immediately.
It’s important that you understand your rights as an expectant mother and the adoption process. We’ll take our time to walk through it all. The following are some of the questions you may want to ask.
How Will I Know if Adoption or Parenting is Right for Me?
Whether you choose to parent or make an adoption plan, it is a lifelong commitment. We’ll talk about your future plans.
If you wish to parent, ask yourself the following:
- Do I have financial support from my parents or my partner?
- Will I be able to work or finish my education?
- What about childcare?
- Will I be able to provide healthcare, a safe home, meals, and the attention a baby needs?
If considering adoption, ask yourself these questions:
- How do I feel about adoption?
- What would adoption look like for me?
- Can I trust an adoptive couple to raise my baby?
- What if those around me disagree with my decision?
Will I Have Any Control Over the Process?
Understanding the adoption process from start to finish is essential to have peace of mind. Today’s adoptions are completely different from just a few decades ago. Now, the expectant mother makes all of the decisions.
You can select the following:
- The couple that will raise your child. You can even view some of our approved couples online, if you would like.
- The amount of contact you wish to have with your child and their adoptive family.
- The life experience you hope your child will have.
- Your unique hospital plan and how to introduce your baby to their adoptive parents.
- The opportunity to meet the adoptive parents you’ve chosen before giving birth.
How Much Will It Cost Me to Make an Adoption Plan?
At A Gift of Hope Adoptions, as with every reputable adoption specialist, you pay nothing to place your baby for adoption. All of your medical and legal costs are covered.
In Missouri, you may also be eligible for assistance with reasonable living expenses such as food, shelter, utilities, and transportation to and from your doctor’s appointments. We will also make sure you have professional adoption counseling before choosing adoption and after placement.
Can I Change My Mind?
Yes, up until the time you sign your consent to adoption, you are free to change your mind. You are the legal parent of your baby until that time.
In Missouri, you cannot sign any legal papers until 48 hours after giving birth. However, other states may have different timelines.
What Can I Expect the First Time I Meet With You?
Your A Gift of Hope Adoptions specialist will want to hear your story. You can share as much or as little as you like. We’ll ask you about your medical care, how far along you are in your pregnancy, and if you’re in a safe living situation.
We’re here to help you make the right choice. You can come alone or bring a trusted family member, your partner, or friend. We’ll meet as often as you like to ensure you understand the adoption process and your rights.
