The Difference Between Personalized and Large-Scale Adoption Agencies

Whether you’re an expectant mother considering placing your baby for adoption or a potential adoptive couple hoping to build your family, the choice of an adoption agency is critical to the process. You both need to know that you will be seen and heard.

While most adoption agencies offer many of the same services, state laws differ on adoption procedures. As a result, a reputable, professional agency must comply with its state’s regulations. Some are large national agencies, while others operate locally.

How do you know which type of agency to choose? Learn the difference between the two so you can choose the agency that best meets your unique needs. Here are a few tips for you to consider.

What Is a Large-Scale Adoption Agency?

National or large-scale adoption agencies operate across multiple states. They generally allocate a larger marketing budget to reach potential adoptive families and expectant mothers or birth mothers nationwide.

As a result, they may not be able to meet with you in person, depending on where you’re located. Additionally, you may work with several different people within the agency for various services. Often, a larger staff means higher overhead, which in turn requires higher agency fees for potential adoptive couples.

However, a larger staff also means that a national agency can provide more detailed services. They may be able to provide direct 24/7 counseling for expectant mothers before placement and extra counseling for birth mothers post placement.

A national agency may also provide opportunities for adoption education, specialized legal assistance, in-depth profile design, and financial protection plans.

What Is a Local, Personalized Adoption Agency?

A local adoption agency offers more personalized services. You meet with a smaller team but have the opportunity to talk face-to-face. This type of adoption agency knows your community and specific state laws.

Because of their size, potential adoptive couples may need to use a third-party for legal assistance, education, or profile creation. There may also be a longer wait time, but a smaller staff and lower overhead mean the adoption cost is usually lower.

By choosing a local adoption agency, expectant mothers and birth mothers have a greater chance of physically meeting with the adoptive couple they’ve selected. You may have more opportunities to interact with your child and build a stronger connection with the adoptive family.
