Selecting the potential adoptive family for your baby is perhaps the most critical step in the adoption process. You’ve chosen to place your child for adoption because you want them to have a happy and secure life. By choosing their adoptive family, you’re shaping their future.
Here are a few tips to get you started.
What to Look For
You know how you would like your child to grow up, and you have specific criteria. Don’t settle for less than what you want. Many families are looking to adopt, and we’re sure you will find the right one for you and your child.
Think About What’s Essential to You
What is most important to you for your child? Is it a good education? A large extended family? A particular religion or race?
Determine the “gotta haves.” Those are the things that are essential for your child’s future. Here are some other questions to ask yourself:
- Where do I want my child to live? In the city? On a farm?
- Do I want my child to be the oldest or have other siblings immediately?
- Do the adoptive parents need to own a home?
- What about their lifestyle? Do they travel? Have hobbies?
- Do they plan on sending my child to college?
Determine the Amount of Communication You Want
As you look through the profiles of prospective families, you want to match with a couple who desires the same amount of communication. If you’re not ready for a completely open adoption, but you want to have contact with the family, find one that agrees to a semi-open adoption.
If you want an open relationship with the adoptive family and your child from the beginning, select a family that wants the same. They should be willing to interact with you regularly.
A closed adoption means you and the adoptive family both want no contact.
Find the Ones Who Make You Feel at Peace
A potential adoptive family’s profile should give you a good sense of their home life, neighborhood, family, pets, and hobbies. You should feel like you know them or want to know them.
When they find their adoptive parent match, many expectant mothers say something like,
“I just knew they were the ones,” or “I instantly felt a connection.” You will know when you see them.
The right match is out there. You will find them.
