Which is the Best Adoption Plan for Me?
You may or may not know there are essentially three adoption plans to choose from. No one plan is better than another. They each have their pros and cons. Let’s take a look at them.
A Closed Adoption Plan
Pros
You’re relieved of all the decision making You remain completely anonymous You don’t have to build and maintain a new relationship |
Cons
You’re not the one to choose the adoptive family You have no further contact You’re not able to learn about the progress of your child |
---|
An Open Adoption Plan*
Pros
You choose everything from the adoptive family, the plan, the amount of contact, etc. You build a close relationship with the adoptive family and your child You gain assurance your child is doing well and thriving in a loving home |
Cons
Choosing a family can be time-consuming but we’ll guide you through the process There is no anonymity New relationships take effort to build
|
---|
*Not every state has legally-binding contact or openness agreements. At A Gift of Hope Adoptions, we work hard to find a family match that is open and willing to have ongoing contact with their birth mother if she so desires.
A Semi-Open Adoption Plan
Pros
You choose everything from the adoptive family, the plan, the amount of contact, etc. You have more anonymity You only give the adoptive family the information you’re comfortable giving |
Cons
Choosing a family can be time-consuming but we’ll guide you through the process You don’t build as close of a relationship Less information exchanged means less contact with your child and family |

Can I Contact My Child After Placement?
It depends on the type of plan you choose. As you can see, by choosing either an open or semi-open adoption plan, you will have more contact with the adoptive family and your child.
With open adoption, both parties exchange full names, addresses, phone numbers, and emails. You have the opportunity to set up meetings and be closely involved in the new family’s life.
With a semi-open adoption, you exchange letters and photos through a 3rd party such as your adoption agency which requires an extra step.
