By now, the fact that you are really pregnant is starting to sink in. We understand how difficult this is, but we’re really glad you’re here. You want what’s best for you and your baby.
Adoption is a tough choice, but you know it may be your best option. Let’s find out.
Beginning the Process
It sounds complicated, but it doesn’t have to be. At A Gift of Hope Adoptions, our coordinators and counselors will guide you through every step. This is an extremely emotional decision and we want to make sure you completely understand the process.
The only thing we’ll ask of you is your trust. We promise to listen to you and provide you with answers.
Making An Adoption Plan
After you’ve contacted us and decided we’re the agency you’d like to work with, we’ll begin by just talking. We’ll ask why you’re choosing adoption and what would be the best outcome for you and your baby. We will never pressure you into making this decision.
As the birth mother, you choose the adoption plan you’re most comfortable with. You’re more than welcome to invite someone else such as a family member or friend to discuss the various plans with you. Ultimately, you will be the one to make the final decision though.
Don’t worry if you’re no longer in a relationship with the birth father. Every state has different laws regarding a birth father’s rights. We will know what is required in your area.
As we discuss the various adoption plans, you’ll begin to learn which plan is right for you. One of our first questions will be about the level of involvement you would like with your child in the future.
Closed Adoption Plan
If you decide you want to remain anonymous, you choose a closed adoption plan. Our adoption coordinator will choose the adoptive family for you based on your requests. We’ll take care of all the details. Some women feel remaining anonymous helps them move on with their lives.
Open or Semi-Open Adoption Plan
If you would like to have ongoing contact with the adoptive family and your child, you would make an open or semi-open adoption plan. These plans involve exchanging personal information like full names, addresses, emails, or even phone numbers with the adoptive family you choose.
In an open adoption, you would have direct contact with them. Together, you would arrange meetings and communicate regularly. With a semi-open adoption, you would have contact, but it would be through a third party such as our adoption agency.
None of these plans are better than the other. You choose based on what’s most comfortable for you and your baby.
Finalizing the Adoption
Once you’ve described the type of family you want to raise your child, our adoption coordinator will show you bios of families that resemble what you’re looking for. Take your time. Finding the perfect family is the most important part of the process.
Each state has different time requirements for signing the consent to adopt once your baby is born. In Missouri, you are given a minimum of 48 hours after your child’s birth to sign any forms. This allows you time to make sure this is the right decision for you.
