Choosing the adoptive family who will raise your child is the most important decision you make. Finding the right family gives you added peace and the assurance that you’ve made the best decision for you and your child.
The couple you choose shapes your child’s future. They should share your values and want the same level of contact.
Don’t worry. The right couple is out there, and the caring counselors at A Gift of Hope Adoptions will help you find them.
What Is the Process?
First, we begin talking about you, your situation, and what you desire for your child. We’ll ensure you completely understand the adoption process before introducing you to prospective couples.
More than anything, we never want you to feel pressured or manipulated into making this choice. You must be confident that placing your child for adoption is the best decision you can make.
Viewing Portfolios
Before you begin viewing the portfolios of potential adoptive couples, we’ll ask you about the characteristics that are most important to you. Think through your desires for your child.
“Do you want your child to have siblings?”
“Should they live on a farm or in the city?”
”Are you wanting in-person visits?”
“What are your thoughts about education, religion, hobbies, etc.?”
Talk extensively with your counselor about your hopes and dreams for your child. We will listen closely to select the right families for you to consider.
You will know they are a good match as you see their physical traits, discover their sense of humor or favorite foods, or learn about their hobbies. The family that adopts your child won’t be strangers.
Choosing Your Plan
We’ll also discuss how much contact you wish to have with the adoptive family. There are essentially three types of plans: open, semi-open, and closed.
Open Adoption
With this plan, you and the adoptive couple you’ve selected might have direct contact immediately. You can decide whether to exchange phone numbers, email addresses, and full names.
Semi-Open Adoption
This plan is also known as a mediated adoption plan. You choose the family and have the option to communicate with them, but all communication goes through A Gift of Hope Adoptions first. It provides more privacy.
Closed Adoption
A closed adoption provides the most privacy possible. You have no contact with the adoptive couple or your child. You both remain entirely anonymous. Only about 5% to 10% of adoptions are closed today.
