Finding out you’re unexpectedly pregnant is shocking enough. But having to decide how to handle it is even more stressful. We understand. None of your choices are easy, but there are benefits to placing your child for adoption.
Not only are you in charge of the adoption process, but you have the added benefit of being able to move forward with your education or career, all while giving your child a better future.
Benefit 1. You Choose the Adoptive Family And Plan
The first benefit of making an adoption plan is picking the best family to raise your child. You decide the type of environment and the parents you want for them. Do you want them to have siblings? Is it necessary that they have the opportunity to go to college? You choose the couple based on your priorities.
You also select the adoption plan that works for you. There are three different plans to choose from:
Open Adoption Plan
Nearly 60-70% of all domestic adoptions today are open. In an open adoption, you and the family you select exchange identifying information. You have one another’s full names, addresses, phone numbers, etc.
Together, you decide how much communication you want to have. You can even arrange to meet before giving birth.
Closed Adoption Plan
If, for whatever reason, you want to remain completely anonymous, choose a closed adoption. Sometimes it’s essential for your safety or the safety of your child to keep the adoption private.
When your adoption is closed, the courts seal the original birth certificate, and neither you nor the adoptive parents know one another’s names.
Semi-Open Adoption
This plan lets you communicate with the adoptive family and your child while remaining private. You exchange first names, but your adoption agency handles all contact between the parties.
You can still select the adoptive family, but you do not know their full names, address, etc.
Benefit 2. You Can Move Forward With Your Future
Making an adoption plan gives you the benefit of being a mother without the day-to-day responsibilities. You have a relationship with your child and their adoptive family while fulfilling your goals and dreams.
Parenting requires time and money. When you choose to place your child for adoption, you have time to continue your education or advance your career. Women who choose to parent might have to drop out of school to pay for expenses.
Benefit 3. Adoption Can Be The Best For Your Child
Your life’s situation determines whether or not it’s best to make an adoption plan. Are you in a place to safely and securely raise a child? Is the birth father involved in your life and committed to helping you? What is best for your child’s future?
A potential adoptive couple usually has more resources emotionally, physically, and financially for a child. Because the approval process for adopting can be difficult, be assured your child is wanted and loved.
If you choose an open plan, your child can connect with their biological family and heritage.
